The carrying walls
The palace is constructed based on the ancient system typically salentino called “a muraja”, originally used to build typical rural constructions (furnieddhri, pajare), subsequently improved for the construction of residential buildings in urban contexts. The system has not been used for decades anymore for residential housebuilding - it’s very expensive - that confers to the building a system of natural thermal regulation.
Two perimeter walls were raised and outdistanced of one meter forming a cavity wall. This creates a system of isolation that is warm in winter and coolness in summer. We are speaking about ecological structure, built with local stones (calcareous). The hollow produced by the extract, necessary for the building, were used as cellars. A cistern can be admired on the floor of the B&B “Altrov’è” breakfast saloon.
